Blackberry and Smart Homes...
I've played around with other smart phones. Even bought an Android phone from HTC. My son has an iPhone and I'm beginning to hear that the Siri 'newness' is wearing thin and isn't all it's advertised. I'm on my third Blackberry and I love it. But I'm hearing that they are struggling especially when you lookout 24 months according to Information Weekly (IT's Message to RIM: Your Best Days Are Over by Art Wittmann).
I don't get it. Sure, they don't have all the cool apps that Android does but they work easily for communicating, scheduling, and typing/texting. The touch screens (without a qwerty) get to me after a bit. Every little touch or glance produces an unwanted 'click'. All the neat little apps that are supposed to make life easier just clutter it for me. And they need updating all the time and as we all know - updates don't always work as expected. And do I really need my smartphone to be my 'everything'? Not even close. If I want to I can Tweet and post on Facebook from my Blackberry. I can email quickly, text even more quickly, and the latest OS is great compared to what they had seven years back. The next one coming out in late 2012 after unexpected delays, according to some, is the harbinger of death for RIM. I disagree. Employers and smart business people will realize that the BB is the best platform for those who need multi-channels to communicate for business/life. For those that love to play, game, watch videos and online content - go get an iPhone or Android, charge your battery EVERY day, and enjoy the ups and downs. In over ten years I've had only a few small outages and issues. The last issue was when Microsoft released Windows 7 and Office 2010 and there was no sync packet available to BB. I mistep but I found the beta release, downloaded it, and it worked terrifically.
Smart Homes: I read where Microsoft has a model home that has smart appliances and computers to tell you when to water your plants, what to cook with what you have in the fridge, if a suit needs picked up, how long it's been since you vacuumed, and to flush the toilet. Do we need this? Do we want our homes 'understanding' us? Is there an inherent risk of this data leaving our private domiciles? I don't know but over Spring Break I went to Texas and had a great time fishing and being outdoors away from everything. Haven't done that since I was a child. One of the best vacations I've ever taken!
